change of plans

The words "change of plans" can serriously suck - especially when your original plans included snow, warm fires and way too much food. In the spirit of New Year's and the business of resolutions, however, this has been perfect. The thing that I always forget is that the result of the phrase "change in plans" often means doing something much better.

In lieu of our annual trip trip to the snow with friends (due to the complete lack of snow), we just decided to spend the time at their house.

This allowed us to take spontaneous trips to the zoo with our daughters:

Have a mama's only date night:

And enjoy simple pleasures like grocery shopping together:

So the lessons learned? Time with friends is amazing wherever you spend it and detours on life's road can end up being more fun and beautiful than anything you could have ever planned for - enjoy it.

So, I have something to tell you 2012, we're making a change of plans. I'm going crazy resolution-style and and I'm going to rock the hell out of you. This year is going to be filled with so much light and happiness you're gonna need shades... So brace yourself.

products i love... all on my own: the kitchen

You know those "products we love" lists in magazines? I always pretty much assume they're not really trying to tell me what the best things out there are, because they are getting paid off by the manufacturers of the products or something. But I LOVE those lists! Sign. I can assure you there has been no persuasion by anyone or anything other than me and my weird obsession with cleaning products. I can seriously have as much, if not more fun, shopping the cleaning aisles of Target as shopping for clothes.

So, for today... the kitchen.

1. Munchkin bottle brushes: Obviously I use these for cleaning baby bottles, but I find tons of other uses for them, too. I prefer these to other brands because the handle is bendy and the bristles are soft. This makes them super pliable and very easy to use. After they get a bit worn out for cleaning baby stuff I repurpose and use them to scrub the inside of skinny or oddly-shaped vases or even to stick down and clean inside of a drain.

2. Pop-up sponges: These are sold at both Trader Joe's and Williams Sonoma, although they're WAY cheaper at Trader Joe's. Sold in packs of 6 - 12 these babies are super economical. They're pretty tough the fist few times you use them (and I really don't like using a nasty sponge for too long) so I have zero guilt when I toss one away for a new one. Also, for someone with limited kitchen cabinet space they are super awesome storage-wise; each one before use is about a 1/4 inch thick.

3. Method lemon verbena antibacterial kitchen spray: Ok, I'll be the first one to admit I'm a packaging whore. Like a shiny object to a raccoon, I squeal with joy when I see an everyday product that has been made to look pretty. Because, why not?! Why do we need these ugly, clinical-looking products all over the place? Method not only makes attractive bottles, they smell awesome and, wait for it.... work REALLY well. There's nothing worse than buying something pretty only to find out it was a sham and the product sucked. (I guess that's how manufacturers trick people lime ME!) This spray is my favorite for all those reasons, plus it is safer to use around my daughter and pets and doesn't make me cringe when it sits out on my kitchen counter. It comes in lots of other scents, but for some reason this one just smells SO clean to me.

4. Method sea minerals dish soap: Ditto to everything above. This one also comes in clementine, cucumber, basil and ginger yuzu, but right now this scent is my obsession.

5. Baking soda: This product is the runner-up to duct tape for the "how many ways can you use me around the house" prize. Toss it in the fridge or freezer for freshness, use as a less noxious alternative to scrubbing your grout (Comet, barf!), sprinkle on the floor and attack with your Shark, put it in your garbage can, let it sit on burnt-on food in a pan overnight with water, put out a fire (and please don't accidentally mistake this tip for flour - I made that mistake and believe me, flour does not put out a stovetop fire!).

6. Dapple baby bottle soap: This one's for the mamas, too. This all natural soap is nice and safe to use on bottles and has the additional benefit of doing a really good job of getting the milk gunk out of the bottom of a bottle. Use it with your Munchkin brush and you're gold, GOLD! Also, the bottle is pretty cute...

thankfulness

I am thankful for so many things, most notably those I love and who love me back:  My new niece, born less than 2 weeks ago (squee!), my amazing husband and beautiful daughter, my parents brothers and sister, my friends and my cats.

As I gear up for this holiday season I want to stay thankful... and sane.

I have slacked off the last few weeks writing as I try to find focus and remind myself of my purpose. Having a creative outlet is so very important and it's something I haven't allowed myself enough of. I guess that's maybe why I've been obsessively painting my nails!

Seriously, try it. I feel so happy after doing something like this:

My trick this year is to to share pictures and ideas of things that I do around the house for christmas. This is also the inevitable time of resolutions and cleaning frenzies, so let's get ready for some organization, too y'all.

Crafts, cleaning, decorating, celebrating, eating... all to come. Let me know what catches your interest as I carry on trying to figure out this whole blogging business. Your feedback and comments so far have been really helpful - thank you!

Happy Thanksgiving!

slap some paper on it

My very wise husband once suggested to his mom that she buy me "elegant paper" for my birthday. A funny choice of words, and yet so perfect.

I love paper. Especially the fancy kind. If I could have a shopping spree anywhere Paper Source would definitely be on my top 10 list.

Finding time for crafting is hard once you have a baby, but something as simple as slapping some scraps of pretty paper on something quickly elevates it to something beautiful to have lying around your home.

Point in case, the crayon collection:

How easy is that?

Slapping Some Paper on Something: Level 2

Decoupage! Again super easy and only takes a few minutes more of preparation.

I wanted to cover up my baby wipe holder. Even the decorative ones in the store still seemed like an eyesore to me and the ones I could find online were a bit much - covered in tassels and other bejewelments.

I cut up a large piece of patterned paper. Make sure you use a paper that is thin and easy to saturate with the decoupage glue. I got my glue from the fabric store but you can also make it by mixing equal parts of white school glue with water. Simply apply the dampened paper - not too much at first so you can still make adjustments, then satuate and mold all the paper to your surface. I ended up having to do three layers in total so the labels on the wipe container were no longer visible.

Tada!

halloween, for real

It came! And it was so much fun.

Lucy had an amazing time trick-or-treating. We walked to a local shopping center and went to our favorite restaurants and coffee shop. There were TONS of kids out and it was really cute to see them all running around so excited.

Like every good diva, Lucy does a costume change at any big event. At Christmas, Easter and her birthday there is always a wardrobe switch, just like Beyoncé. Don't worry, I'm not going to get all Toddlers and Tiaras. We're just the happy recipients of generous family and friends who like to shower Lucy with clothes and we need to show them off, duh!

This adorable outfit was whipped up by my Mom. What, sew something amazing in the blink of an eye? No biggie. Amazing.

I was also excited that, for the first time in a few years, I got to stay home and carve pumpkins. I have wanted to make polka dot pumpkins ever since seeing a design by Martha years ago. She used a fancy dremel tool. I just used an apple corer and it was super easy. Although, as I stabbed away, my husband, Dave, asked every 10 minutes, "Are you being careful? Are you being careful? Really, are you being careful?"

The rest of the evening was spent relaxing with the fam, eating pizza and waiting for the trick-or-treaters that never really came.

Oh well! At least we got to eat plenty of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and enjoy the ambiance.

halloween!

I love Halloween. I love the candy, the decorations and all the dressing up. What's even more fun than that? Dressing up an adorable baby.

Last year Lucy was a cozy lion. This year we went to fairy land.

This was the original loot gathered to make Lucy's fairy costume (all purchased at Target for under $20) - all inspired by these adorable wings purchased at the Renaissance Fair (for a price that I wish was closer to $20). The dye is from the fabric store.

You'll see in a moment that I pull a switcheroo. The tights pictured above did not work out at all. I bought clothes I thought would be comfortable and then dye them to match the wings. I got it stuck in my head that I wanted to do striped tights. My first attempt didn't work. Then, "take two" with some white leggings:

Success! And pretty cute, huh?

Finally, a fairy princess.

Today is still just the 30th, so there is still more fun to come. I just couldn't wait to share a sneak peek.

nailz!

I work in an office and spend most of my day at the keyboard. As an admittedly poor typist, I spend a lot of time looking at my hands. My recent obsession with decorating my nails in interesting ways has brought a smile to my face while immersed in Excel spreadsheets.

The Sally Hansen Salon Effects are really pretty awesome. They are essentially stickers that cover your entire nail. These are hit or miss depending on who you talk to. Some of my friends say they are too hard to apply, are to expensive or don't last long enough. I have to say I'm a huge fan and only have some minor "design issues" with them.

For me they are super easy to apply and last up to 2 weeks with no chipping. This makes the $12 price tag seem justifiable because a regular manicure would cost the same and chip within 2 days. Other perks: Instantly dry! Usually painting my nails means all the dishes are done, the house is clean and my pajamas are on because any task outside of brushing my teeth means the paint is ruined. And even then I usually wake up with sheet lines embossed on my perfectly painted nails. These require zero dry-time.

Hello... Sweet!

My only problem? The designs aren't very modern or mature. Leopard print and butterflies just don't jive with the look I want to achieve.

That's okay though because there are plenty that make me happy - like the ones above and these Halloween ones:

I also like all these new crackle polishes. These work for me because they still look kinda good even when my polish inevitably starts to chip:

I also love to be inspired by friends (this paint job kept making me think of the movie The Velvet Goldmine):

And this was my attempt to copy a design I saw on Hey Nice Nails:

Finally, you must try this tutorial on newspaper nails. SO easy:

It's going to be addictive, I can tell. Just you wait...

the kitchen floor

I just spilled pasta on the kitchen floor, stepped in it with my socks and still managed to save a curious one-year-old from falling of the back doorstep. Soggy socks aside I can say I did a good job.

Taking the credit is the hard part.

Welcome to my world of accepting what is imperfect and loving what is.
